The other day my daughter brought home from school a handout that called for parents who were willing to voluntarily take part in cleaning up fallen leaves around the school. Parents' volunteer activities mean a great deal to children's education because children can learn from their parents' attitude the meaningfulness of working for other people.
However, I felt somewhat uncomfortable about the wording of the handout as follows: I apply for participation in the voluntary cleanup activity (Yes/No). Parents have to circle Yes or No, sign their names, and submit the application form (the lower half of the handout) to their children's teachers. It seems that teachers or PTA staff are going to check against the applicant list who actually participate in it.
I want to ask who the hell could circle No in this context. It's like compulsory service in the name of volunteer activity. I think it's doubtful this kind of way of calling for volunteers would be appropriate to children's education.
